In years of crisis caused by migration, the pandemic, and the uncertainty resulting from crises, the local level has made indispensable contributions, says MEP Mandl.
Strasbourg (OTS) – Austrian MEP Lukas Mandl spoke today, Tuesday, at the European Mayors Summit. The summit is taking place on the premises of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Mandl, who declared "cooperation with mayors and all those active in local politics" to be his "top priorities," emphasized: "The old principles of 'all politics is local' and 'think globally, act locally' prove their relevance every day anew and are even more important than in previous decades. Social media and messaging services are used to sow discord. This weakens our society. This is primarily possible because there is less and less personal interaction between people. Constructive political work in the neighborhood, in the housing estate, in the district, in the municipality, is an antidote to this development. Therefore, one can only thank mayors and their teams for their work. We in the European Parliament must listen carefully to what representatives at the local level have to say about social developments."
Mandl also emphasized that the local political level had made “indispensable contributions to social cohesion” during the crisis years of irregular migration, the pandemic, and the uncertainty caused by global crises.
