„The world needs the United Nations, now more than ever. At the same time the United Nations are in a desperate need of a reform”, the Austrian lawmaker Lukas Mandl said in the European Parliament's plenary ahead of the UN High Level Political Forum 2026 taking place at the United Nations' headquarters in New York.
Lukas Mandl and the Italian lawmaker Pierfrancesco Maran were the Co-Rapporteurs on the European Parliament's stance on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Mandl advocated for a balanced approach in dealing with the SDGs: "They have to be seen holistically in their entirety. Critics must be informed that also education, growth and innovation - factors that all foster growth - are among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals", Mandl stated. The SDGs would be "an excellent outline for a positive pathway ahead". They "must not be ideologically misused".
