Austrian MEP Lukas Mandl, together with his Swedish colleague Alice Teodorescu Mawe – both from the European People's Party – had invited people to a memorial service on October 7, 2024, to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist massacre against Jewish people in Israel. More than 1,000 people were killed in the massacre. Numerous others were injured or taken hostage. The terrorist attack has led to an intensified fight against terrorism.
At the memorial event in the European Parliament, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Director for Global Action at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in California, delivered the keynote speech. The commemorative address was delivered by Liberal MEP Petras Austrevicius from Lithuania. The event was moderated by Conservative MEP Assita Kanko from Belgium. Among those attending the memorial event was Austrian Social Democratic MEP Hannes Heide.
"The important principle 'Never forget' must also contribute to a clear 'Never again.' Therefore, we must now contribute in Europe and worldwide to ensuring that Jewish life can flourish without fear," said Mandl.
