I am particularly pleased that the first member of the future EU Commission to contact me for an exchange was the new Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas. She has been a candidate for some time because she is also the "High Representative for Foreign Affairs" of the member states (i.e., the "European Council" of member state governments).
I have high hopes for her to pursue a clear EU foreign policy, for a "Europe with greater external strength," for which I have been working for around eleven years now, and for seven years in the European Parliament. Kaja Kallas was a Member of the European Parliament. This is the best prerequisite for working in the European Commission with a) closeness to the people and b) visionary c) leadership.
In this week's conversation in my office, I had the opportunity to discuss all the major relevant geopolitical issues with Kaja Kallas – from Putin's war with Russia and the dangers posed by the Iranian mullah regime to the EU's international partnerships and the Abraham Accords as – as I always say – "the only positive geopolitical development of this century so far."
